So you have your Xbox 360 and enjoy playing with all your friends in the comfort of your own home. You have mastered every game you own, and every game your friends have brought by. But how do you compare against people in the outside world?
Online gaming is the newest fad in Xbox technology. By connecting your Xbox 360 to the internet, you can play against strangers, play in tournaments, or play against friends you already know – each in your own home.
But connecting your Xbox 360 to the internet has been difficult in the past. You must locate the console near an internet connection, or bring your computer over to the console. If you are working on a single line DSL or cable connection, by using your Xbox online, you are disabling your computer and possibly your internet phone service.
The answer to this is, of course, the use of a wireless gaming router. Every Xbox now comes with wireless capability, so the addition of a wireless router can solve all of your problems. The original Xbox (as opposed to the Xbox 360 which was released in 2005), did not have a wireless adapter. If you have an older model such as this, you will need to buy a wireless network adapter for the Xbox.
The way to connect your Xbox to a wireless internet system is simpler than you might think. First, you need to ensure that your internet connection is live. Then, you will need to install a wireless router to the connection, between the internet connection point (cable box, DSL modem, etc.) and any other components.
Once you are assured that your computer can recognize and utilize the wireless router, you are ready to go. This step is vital, for if you aren’t absolutely sure your wireless network is working, nothing else from this point will work, either!
Fire up your Xbox 360 gaming system, connect it to your television, and navigate to the “Dashboard”. From there, you can choose networking (this varies on individual systems), and find “Wireless Settings”. You will then be able to choose the type of network and make a connection. There are further instructions online, and some routers may require specific SSID settings to be input, but this should be fairly easy.
After you have established a wireless internet connection by using the wireless network adapter of your Xbox 360, you won’t believe all that you can do with that box. You can download movies to the Xbox and use it as a DVR. You can play in tournaments every night of the week.
